The latest report is in, and it's looking like good news for adult learners in Tennessee. According to findings by the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the state's initiative for adult education, Tennessee Reconnect, has been making some real waves. The data, detailing progress achieved through this program, shows an uptick in enrollment, degree completion, and subsequent wage increases, as reported on the Tennessee Higher Education Commission's website.
Sifting through the numbers, enrollment among those partaking in Tennessee Reconnect — dubbed 'Reconnectors' — climbed by 45.1%, and there was a noteworthy 38% increase in completions over the previous year. "This new data confirms what Tennessee has long believed: when adult learners are supported with personalized guidance and clear pathways, they don’t just enroll, they succeed," Dr. Steven Gentile, THEC Executive Director, told the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. There is more in the full 2025 Navigate Reconnect Report, but the overarching message is clear: the program is providing tangible results.
The report points out that not only are more Tennesseans getting back into the classroom, but they're also outperforming their peers across the board. After three years, 33.5% of Reconnectors had earned a credential, which is over 7 percentage points higher than other adult learners in the region. Better still, 78% of Reconnectors were employed when they enrolled, and their average income swelled by a robust 21% within three years. One part of the study highlights, "Reconnectors are seeing real economic gains." The skills and credentials gained are opening doors for them that weren't there before.
Success stories abound, and it appears that Tennessee Reconnect isn’t just for a single demographic. The program proves a hit across various groups, helping learners outperform others regardless of factors like sex, race, or prior enrollment history. “Our navigators are the heart of this work,” said Jessica Gibson, THEC Senior Director of Adult Initiatives, “They walk alongside adult learners from the first conversation to the final credential, helping them navigate every barrier in between.” The personalized support seems to be a game-changer, according to the report.
Having bolstered persistence and completion rates, Navigate Reconnect has gone ahead and made itself a template across Tennessee for adult college coaching. Over 11,000 residents have benefited from what's turning out to be a state model worth watching. It's not just degrees and certificates; it's about strengthening the workforce and fitting into the state’s economic gear more snugly. As adult education evolves in Tennessee, it could pay to keep an eye on how this scalable model might influence broader higher education strategies across the country.
