On Friday, the Utah Utes secured a much-needed victory against Kansas in a thrilling comeback, stomping their way to a 31-21 win that elevated their season record to 10-2. Their triumph was catalysed by a standout performance from quarterback Devon Dampier, who, according to Citizen Tribune, "threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns." The Utes now hang on to a thread of hope for a Big 12 championship spot, with a series of other games' outcomes yet to determine their fate.
While the Utes were down 14-10 going into the fourth quarter, they erupted with 21 points to clinch the win. Larry Simmons emerged as a key player with two touchdown receptions, highlighted by a pivotal 48-yard touchdown pass from Dampier that ultimately sealed Kansas’s fate. On the defensive side, Elijah Davis's 97-yard interception return was another critical moment, contributing significantly to the Utes' momentum swing, as detailed by Citizen Tribune. Despite allowing 290 yards rushing, the Utes managed to offset Kansas's ground game with an effective aerial attack and timely interceptions.
However, the Jayhawks didn't make it easy for Utah. Kansas entered the fray, aiming to become bowl eligible, but fell short due in part to critical turnovers. Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels, while able to contribute on the ground, was haunted by interceptions, his third costing his team a pick-six at a crucial juncture, as reported by ABC4. Amid this loss, Kansas concludes its season with a 5-7 record, missing out on bowl eligibility.
