Chaos briefly erupted at a Duluth grocery store when a routine loss prevention intervention escalated into violence. The incident, which took place at the Super One on 5300 Bristol Street, was responded to by local police on Monday evening. According to the Duluth Police report, officers arrived on the scene shortly after 6 p.m. only to find that the confrontation had already subsided, with two individuals detained by the store's security.
Initial findings indicate a 15-year-old boy had stolen an item and exited the store, accompanied by 22-year-old Brent Edwards. When they were confronted by the Loss Prevention Officer, an altercation was sparked, during which Edwards is reported to have threatened the store employee with a bat. In an attempt to subdue the situation, the Loss Prevention Officer had no choice but to deploy a chemical irritant. Minor injuries were reported among the parties involved.
In the wake of the confrontation, Edwards faced more serious consequences, being jailed at the St. Louis County Jail on charges of 2nd Degree Assault. The younger perpetrator received a citation for shoplifting and 5th Degree Assault. With store theft being an ongoing concern, this incident highlights the often-underestimated dangers faced by retail workers tasked with preventing loss.
