
A tragic event unfolded on Thanksgiving Day in Waggaman, Louisiana, where St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's deputy Shaquille Guerin, 35, was fatally shot by his brother. WCAX reported that the shooting occurred just after 5:30 p.m. on Marigold Lane, and despite efforts from emergency medical crews and fellow deputies, Guerin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities quickly to identify the suspected shooter as Darius Guerin, 32, and pursued his vehicle after he fled the scene. According to FOX8Live, the chase ended in Lafitte, where Darius Guerin attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended by deputies. A gun was recovered along his flight path. He now faces a second-degree murder charge.
The victim, Shaquille Guerin, served eight years with the St. John Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office, both in the uniform patrol division and the detective bureau. "Shaquille did his job well! He had the heart of a public servant," Sheriff Michael Tregre expressed in a statement obtained by WDSU. Shaquille is survived by his wife, Roxanne, and their three children.
The investigation into the shooting is currently underway by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. As the community mourns the loss, Sheriff Tregre asks, "We ask that you would keep his family in your thoughts and prayers." A sentiment echoed in the official statement released by the St. John Parish Sheriff's Office and reported by WDSU.
