A West Chester firefighter's bravery was captured on bodycam footage as he saved an elderly man from a submerged car in a pond on Thursday night. The incident, which took place close to 8:37 p.m. near Muhlhauser Barn on Beckett Road, unfolded rapidly when the man's car crashed into the water. WLWT reported the rescue occurred swiftly, with the man pulled to safety within six minutes of the emergency call.
Diving into action across the street from their station, the West Chester Fire Department's quick response was crucial. According to WHIO, the department's crews from Station 74 were on the scene within seconds, their readiness a stroke of providence given the emergency's proximity. The man, who was unable to get out of his vehicle after crashing, reportedly told officials he had missed a curve in the road due to visibility issues.
The unidentified firefighter, mentioned in a WCPO report, jumped into the water and extricated the man from his precarious entrapment. The elderly individual was the sole occupant of the car, which remains the only vehicle involved in the crash. He suffered minor injuries during the incident.
Subsequently, the rescued man was taken to UC West Chester Hospital as a precaution.
