In a decisive move against child pornography, a West Tennessee man has been sentenced to a decade behind bars. James Ballew, 74, of Milan, faced the music after federal agents discovered over 140,000 photos and nearly 8,000 videos of child sexual abuse material on his computers.
Locking away individuals like Ballew is part of an ongoing battle to protect the most vulnerable from the darkest corners of human action. U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant spearheaded the announcement of the sentence. According to a U.S. Department of Justice press release, the sentencing took place following Ballew’s guilty plea on two counts of child pornography possession.
The incriminating evidence was seized during a February 10, 2023, search by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents at Ballew’s residence, with subsequent analysis of the two computers revealing a large volume of illicit material. After his prison term, United States District Judge S. Thomas Anderson has mandated that Ballew will be under supervised release for an additional 10 years and required to register as a sex offender.
According to the Department of Justice's announcement, the case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 that has been instrumental in the battle against child exploitation by bringing together a vast network of resources to address this heinous issue.
“Possession of child pornography is an abhorrent and disturbing crime that endangers and harms real child victims forever. And it doesn’t take an economist to know that demand drives supply," Dunavant stated. "By seeking out and possessing thousands of images and videos of young children being sexually abused, Ballew contributed to their past victimization. And by fueling the demand for child pornography, his conduct likely also contributed to the future harm done to children in the name of profit." The relentless efforts of the FBI, in collaboration with the Milan Police Department, led to Ballew's prosecution by Assistant United States Attorney Adam Davis.
