A violent altercation erupted on Main Street in Milford last Friday when a man was brutally beaten with a baseball bat, according to information from the Milford Police Department. The incident was reported around 5:55 p.m. near the Main Street Market, with multiple 911 calls flooding in about a fight that had escalated dangerously.
Officers who arrived at the scene encountered a male victim suffering from severe head and face injuries, while the attacker had already made his escape in a Black GMC Sierra pick-up truck. Aiding in the case, the neighboring Hopedale Police Department located and stopped the suspect vehicle shortly after at 6:00 p.m. on Mendon St., noting that the driver had blood on his clothing.
Surveillance footage from the scene showed the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Andre Oliveira Gomes of Whitinsville, MA, trying to run the victim over before exiting his truck to commit the physical assault. Gomes was taken into custody at 6:20 p.m. and charged with multiple crimes, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to murder, and mayhem, as reported by the Milford Police.
Chief of Police Robert Tusino expressed his relief over the quick apprehension, stating that "violent acts of this nature have no place in our community," as noted by the Milford Police Department. The victim was promptly taken to UMASS Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries, resulting from what the chief called a "malicious assault." Currently, Gomes is being held at Worcester House of Corrections with bail set at $100,000.
