A roadside worker and a driver were severely injured after an accident on Interstate 65 in northwest Indiana, according to reports from state police. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, amidst traffic that often seems indifferent to lives outside of its immediate reach.
The crash happened near 61st Avenue in Merrillville, as a Chevrolet Silverado caromed off its path for reasons yet unclear and collided with a Ford F-150 parked on the shoulder, authorities explained. NBC Chicago reported the Ford was operated by Interstate Business Solutions, which deploys crews to manage the less-regarded but essential work of keeping our roadways clear of debris.
The force of the impact was substantial enough to hurl the Ford into a worker who was in the midst of their duties. The worker was subsequently airlifted with grave injuries to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Meanwhile, according to WNDU, the Silverado overturned, resulting in serious injuries to its driver as well.
In the aftermath, state police have reiterated the importance of driver vigilance and courtesy on the roads. They implore motorists to slow down or move over when approaching the individuals stationed on the side of the road, engaged in maintaining the shared spaces that many take for granted. Despite these calls for caution, the fast-paced world of the interstate often renders these workers invisibly vulnerable, underlining a broader disconnect between the hustle of traffic and the safety of those who maintain its byways.
