Authorities at Stephens County High School in Georgia apprehended a 16-year-old student on Monday after a weapons detection system identified a loaded gun in their backpack. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Superintendent Dr. Connie Franklin said the incident demonstrates the effectiveness of the school’s safety measures.
According to reports, after the alert was triggered, the student was immediately detained by school administrators and the on-site school resource officer. The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office quickly responded to the scene, making the arrest of the unnamed student due to their age, and possibly adding additional charges as the investigation continues, as indicated by WYFF 4.
The student is currently facing multiple charges, including theft by receiving stolen property, carrying weapons on school property, and possession of a handgun by a person under 18. The weapon in question was confirmed to be stolen, and while police do not typically release the names of juveniles, it is standard practice when they are charged as adults, which has not been the case here.
In response, the Stephens County School System and sheriff's office will review and may strengthen safety protocols as the investigation continues and additional charges may be pending. Dr. Franklin emphasized that the incident highlights the effectiveness of the school's safety measures in protecting students and staff.
