What started as an after-hours hangout on South First Street turned tragic yesterday morning, when gunfire left one man dead and three others wounded inside a San Jose business, according to police.

Officers were called to the 800 block of South First Street at about 3:43 a.m. after reports of shots being fired and found four people suffering from gunshot wounds, SFGATE reported. Emergency crews rushed the victims to nearby hospitals while officers shut down South First Street between Martha and Virginia streets so detectives could lock down and process the scene.

The San Jose Police Department said in a statement that one adult male victim later "succumbed to his injuries" at the hospital, while the three other shooting victims were expected to survive, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Police said the suspect or suspects had taken off before officers arrived and urged anyone with information to call the SJPD Homicide Unit at 408-277-5283.

Neighbors Say It Started As An After-Hours Gathering

Business owners in the neighborhood told reporters the site sometimes hosts late-night get-togethers and that people had gathered there for an after-hours party shortly before the shooting, NBC Bay Area reported. KTVU noted that police did not immediately identify the business but that the violence appeared to have unfolded at or near Lolita’s Furniture on the 800 block of South First Street.

Police Response And The Investigation So Far

Homicide detectives spent the morning canvassing nearby businesses and collecting surveillance footage while the department’s homicide unit led an active investigation, according to SFGATE. The SJPD shared contact emails for the detectives on the case and asked anyone with video footage, eyewitness accounts, or other relevant information to get in touch.

How This Shooting Fits Into This Year’s Violence

The killing is expected to be recorded as San Jose’s 26th homicide of 2025, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The South First Street shooting follows a string of recent Bay Area incidents, including a Black Friday shooting at Valley Fair Mall in San Jose that wounded two people, according to AP News.
