Halfway there and on track to alleviate congestion, Arizona's Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) widening project is steadily forging ahead. As per an announcement from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), significant progress has been made in expanding the freeway between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Val Vista Drive in the Southeast Valley. This $200 million venture, initiated in August 2024, is deemed a crucial upgrade for the region's infrastructure, slated to be fully operational by spring 2027.
In what is a significant effort to quickly ease traffic flow, construction teams are currently working to add a pair of new lanes in each direction from Loop 101 to Gilbert Road, with one additional lane being laid down in each direction between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive. The expansion is extending its reach, including on- and off-ramps reconstruction, walls, and bridge widening within Chandler and Gilbert, according to ADOT. Accompanying these larger fixtures are new freeway lighting, signage, and enhanced drainage systems.
Another facet of this comprehensive overhaul comprises the installation of cutting-edge technology, poised to sharpen real-time traffic insights. The future track of Loop 202 will feature a new fiber-optic cable to power closed-circuit cameras and other equipment, serving to furnish ADOT and the public with instantaneous updates on traffic conditions and journey timings.
Clearly laying out the commitment of diverse parties, this project is a collaborative endeavor, seen through the partnership between ADOT and the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), which operates as the metropolitan planning organization for the Phoenix region. The initiative is packed under MAG's Regional Transportation Plan and is financially supported by Proposition 400, a transport-focused countywide half-cent sales tax that was green-lighted by voters back in 2004.
