Arizona Senator Mark Kelly is standing firm against what he describes as an intimidation campaign orchestrated by the Pentagon, aimed at silencing dissent within the ranks. In a recent series of interviews, Kelly voiced his determination to fulfill his oversight responsibilities, disavowing any allegiance to political figures such as Donald Trump, and specifically calling out Pete Hegseth, the current Secretary of Defense.
In a candid statement, Kelly reiterated, "I don’t work for these people. I don’t work for Hegseth. He might think I do, being retired. I work for the people of Arizona." He also expressed concern for the message such intimidation tactics send to others who might wish to speak out.
On CNN's Anderson Cooper 360°, Kelly called the investigation unserious, citing being notified via social media by what he labeled as two Pentagon correspondents, Matt Gaetz and a known purveyor of Pizzagate conspiracy theories. "That shows what this is all about, this is about attention," Kelly stated, highlighting the lack of professionalism and seriousness from the Pentagon's current leadership. He went on to describe Hegseth as "the most unqualified Secretary of Defense this country has ever had."
Kelly's strong stance continued on MS NOW's Morning Joe, where he directly accused the Pentagon of using tactics of "escalation and intimidation" to silence dissent. "This is escalation," Kelly declared. Despite these tactics and a harsh critique from Donald Trump suggesting he should be "hanged and executed," Kelly affirmed, "I'm not going to stop doing my job." He condemned the firing of military personnel by the Trump administration on grounds of gender and race, emphasizing the military's commitment to rules and professionalism.
Throughout his public appearances, Senator Kelly has maintained that his duty is to provide oversight to various government departments and uphold the safety and interests of Arizonans and Americans alike. "We’re the greatest military in the world because we follow the rules, we’re professional. We’ve got the best equipment, the best people, the best training," Kelly noted, stressing the potential damage done by what he perceives as reckless leadership under Hegseth.
