Chaos was narrowly averted at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport yesterday afternoon when a man sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the upper-level baggage claim area. In an incident that could have disrupted the lives of thousands of travelers, Atlanta police indicate that operations continued normally despite the emergency response.
According to a statement released by the Atlanta Police Department, officers rushed to the scene at approximately 3:34 PM, where they found 59-year-old Douglas E. Smith with a gunshot wound to his left arm, a situation that, despite its potential to instill panic and disorder, was swiftly contained by airport security and law enforcement officials ensuring no further threat was posed to the public's safety.
Smith was alert and conscious when officers located him and was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The preliminary investigation suggested that the injury was self-inflicted and resulted in criminal charges against Smith. According to the Atlanta Police Department's report, Smith has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and reckless conduct.
