A 37-year-old Austin man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a Williamson County jury convicted him of continuous sexual abuse of a child. On Friday, a judge sentenced Garrett Andrew Bailey to life in prison without the possibility of parole and ordered that term to run consecutively to an earlier Bexar County sentence for child-sex trafficking, so the punishments stack back-to-back.
Jurors heard evidence that prosecutors said showed years of abuse, including a video that they told the court depicted Bailey sexually abusing a child younger than eight. The case grew out of a multi-agency investigation launched in mid-2023, and during search warrants tied to suspected production of child sexual-abuse material, two children were taken into CPS custody. One child later reported being assaulted at a Round Rock hotel, according to FOX 7 Austin.
Investigation and Evidence
The probe pulled in investigators from Williamson, Bexar and Comal counties, with police in Live Oak helping uncover links to other suspected offenders, according to local coverage. Detectives found key material during earlier arrests that widened the investigation, KSAT reported.
Prosecutors told the court that much of that material, including explicit video evidence, became the backbone of their case at trial. Jurors saw what the district attorney later described as some of the most disturbing content his office has ever presented in a courtroom.
Flight, Arrest and Earlier Bexar County Case
Authorities said Bailey did not stick around to face charges. According to FOX 7 Austin, he fled Texas and was tracked to Oregon, where U.S. Marshals arrested him in 2023 and returned him to Central Texas.
Separately, in Bexar County, Bailey later pleaded guilty to human-trafficking and child-pornography charges. That case resulted in a 40-year sentence, which the new Williamson County life term will follow.
What the Charge Carries
Continuous sexual abuse of a young child is prosecuted under Texas Penal Code §21.02 as a first-degree felony. The law allows for a sentence from 25 to 99 years or life in prison, depending on the case and the defendant’s history. It is one of the toughest punishment ranges on the books in Texas and framed prosecutors’ request for a life sentence here, according to the Texas statutes.
Prosecutors’ Response
Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick praised the work of investigators and the jury, saying jurors were able to see “this depraved individual abusing a child” and that Bailey “will never get out of prison,” according to a statement quoted by the Austin American-Statesman. The DA’s office noted that investigators and prosecutors spent months reviewing graphic and traumatic evidence to secure the conviction and to identify and protect other potential victims.
Related investigations across multiple counties remain active, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward to local law enforcement, KSAT reported. Court records show Bailey’s life sentence will be served consecutively to his earlier 40-year term, ensuring he will spend decades behind bars with no chance at parole.
