A 29-year-old Austin man is behind bars this week, accused of racking up more than 20 felony counts tied to child sexual abuse material after what investigators say were months of disturbing online contacts involving a minor. He is being held on high bond and is scheduled for an initial court appearance next Thursday.

Arrest and charges

Shadow Hawk Mallan, 29, was arrested after officers served a search warrant on Tuesday, Dec. 9. He was charged in Mower County District Court with 21 felony counts, including dissemination and possession of child sexual abuse material and soliciting a child through electronic means. During the searches, investigators say they seized computers, cellphones, photographs, apparent drug paraphernalia, and body-worn camera recordings from locations tied to Mallan.

According to the Austin Daily Herald, bail was set at $250,000 without conditions or $125,000 with conditions. Mallan is currently being held in the Mower County Jail as the case moves forward.

How the probe began

Law enforcement officials say the case began with a CyberTipline report and moderation flags from an online platform, a route that has become common in child exploitation investigations. Those alerts triggered subpoenas to service providers and a deeper forensic look at the digital trail.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children operates the CyberTipline, which routes reports of suspected child sexual exploitation to agencies across the country. NCMEC is the nation’s leading force in child protection, driving new strategies and tools that help safeguard children and support the people who look after them.

Messages, platforms, and evidence

Court filings cited by local reporters allege that between June 15 and July 16, Mallan exchanged about 4,700 Snapchat messages with someone investigators believe was a 14-year-old. The messages allegedly included sexually explicit material along with manipulative and threatening language.

Snap records reportedly linked an account to an email address containing the handle "shadowmallan96@". Investigators then subpoenaed Google, Discord, Metronet, and Charter in an effort to connect various files and accounts to Mallan. A Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agent who reviewed a Discord file found that it contained child sexual abuse material, as stated by the Austin Daily Herald.

Legal context and next steps

The counts against Mallan are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. His initial appearance is set for next Thursday in Mower County District Court.

If he is convicted, offenses involving child sexual abuse material carry severe penalties under Minnesota law. County prosecutors say the investigation remains active as they continue gathering digital records and witness testimony.
