Balboa Park turned the holiday volume all the way up this weekend, as December Nights rolled out a brand-new light show splashed across the San Diego Museum of Art and a 21-plus Après Tavern steps from the Plaza de Panama. Families and visitors packed the Prado for hourly projection shows, free Ferris wheel rides in the Family Zone, and quick flurries of artificial “snow” drifting through the evening crowds. Hometown star Frankie J capped Saturday with a main-stage set that pulled a big audience into the Plaza de Panama.
New Light Show and Après Tavern Debut
According to the City of San Diego, the adults-only Après Tavern sits next to the main stage and gives festivalgoers front-row seats to a new projection mapped across the museum’s facade. The city credits sponsors, including San Diego Community Power, with helping bring the display to life, and notes that the colorful projection is scheduled to light up the San Diego Museum of Art at least once per hour during festival nights.
Frankie J Headlines Plaza de Panama
KPBS previewed the weekend lineup and highlighted Grammy-nominated Frankie J’s Saturday performance, set for 7 p.m., giving fans the chance to catch his set alongside the nighttime projections. The two-day celebration, now in its 48th year, once again packed Balboa Park with large crowds and dozens of performance stages.
Family Zone, 'Snow' And Sponsors
The Times of San Diego described the park’s holiday décor as a “winter-inspired wonderland,” complete with moments of faux “snow” drifting through the air during the museum projections. A reel on the City of San Diego’s Facebook page showcases the vibrant projection mapping on the museum facade and thanks sponsors, including San Diego Community Power, for helping make the spectacle possible.
Getting There: Shuttles And Crowds
The Metropolitan Transit System operated a free special-event shuttle between City College and Balboa Park, posting maps and schedules to help riders navigate the crowds. MTS urged attendees to plan ahead and lean on transit, noting detours and modified service on several routes during December Nights.
For anyone who missed the live show, the City of San Diego shared an official reel on Facebook featuring highlights of the projections and Frankie J’s performance. The video, along with full schedules and maps, is available through the City of San Diego website. A preview of the weekend's programming, including free festivities and music by hometown star Frankie J, also ran ahead of the event, according to Hoodline.
