Bay Area residents can expect a dry spell and chilly temperatures settling in as high pressure takes charge of the weather pattern in the coming days. According to an update from the National Weather Service San Francisco, lingering showers will disappear by morning, making way for clearer skies and cooler temperatures. Valley and coastal communities should anticipate highs in the low to mid-50s, while the mountain areas might experience temperatures ranging from low 40s to mid-50s.
Temperatures will take a dip overnight with interior Central Coast regions, notably those at higher elevations, seeing the mercury fall into the 30s – a situation severe enough to trigger a Cold Weather Advisory, however, if we're lucky enough to get some high clouds skirting across the Bay Area counties overnight temperatures might fair a few degrees warmer than expected, alternatively, if the clouds don't show we could be in for even cooler temperatures due to radiational cooling aligning with some of the Model Output Statistics (MOS) guidance. The Aviation sector is primed for favorable conditions post-sunrise, with high confidence in VFR conditions persisting through the weekend and into the early hours of the following week.
Looking ahead, the long-term forecast brought to us by the NWS suggests that the upper level ridging could maintain dominance until midweek before uncertainty creeps in, ensemble guidance is favoring this settled period through Tuesday into Wednesday. However, some variance in the models indicates possible changes later on with rain chances popping up as early as Wednesday night and possibly persisting until Friday, contributing what's being described as "beneficial" rainfall.
Mariners are advised to exercise caution as very rough seas begin to subside, a mix of westerly swell and southerly wind waves has led to hazardous conditions which should improve into next week, "Hazardous marine conditions will continue through the weekend with conditions improving by Monday," as high pressure and dry weather return to deliver a more stable set of conditions for those looking to take to the seas, per NWS. Finally, those navigating the waters around San Francisco should heed the ongoing Small Craft Advisory in effect, which will extend into parts of the coast well into Sunday.
