Bay Area residents are bracing for a mix of minor coastal flooding and cold weather as advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service in San Francisco. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 6 AM Tuesday until 3 PM Sunday, impacting the shorelines of San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, and Monterey Bay. This period of high tides could see waters encroaching on the usual serenity of these areas, warranting caution among locals.
In addition, a Cold Weather Advisory has been issued, bringing a chill to temperatures ranging from 33 to 36 degrees in the North Bay Valleys, southern interior Monterey, and San Benito counties, with temperatures possibly dipping into the upper 20s in the higher elevations. The North Bay Advisory is set to expire on Thursday at 8 AM, while the advisory for Monterey and San Benito counties extends into early Friday. Prolonged exposure to the cold has the potential to be hazardous, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the unhoused community, and can lead to hypothermia.
The weather scenario is showing some signs of improvement, with a "slight warming trend" expected to begin Friday and continue into the weekend, as indicated by updated weather discussions from the National Weather Service. The cold snap marks the season's first noteworthy plunge into lower temperatures. Winds, which had been gusty in the past days, particularly in the hills of North Bay, are anticipated to weaken, signaling some respite.
The long-term forecast indicates a persistent high-pressure area off the California coast, resulting in calm and gradually warming conditions. Despite a few weak systems pushing some moisture towards the coastal waters, the central narrative for the next week remains one of benign weather. The ridge flattens out but continues to dominate off the SoCal coast until mid-next week, maintaining dry conditions for most parts of the Bay Area and Central Coast. Interior regions might even experience highs in the mid-70s by next Wednesday. However, as per the National Weather Service, the "Longer range ensemble guidance better precip return by the middle of the month."
