Heads up, Portland residents! With seasonal rains in full swing, it’s the perfect time to add some greenery to your yard—and you can do it for free. Portland Parks & Recreation’s Urban Forestry division is giving away 4,000 trees for planting on private property across the city, and more than 3,400 have already taken root in local yards, according to the City of Portland.

Residents can still claim one of the remaining trees by visiting Portland.gov/free-yard-trees. Available species include native, nut-bearing, flowering, and fall-colour varieties, as per the City of Portland. Households may request up to three trees, and Urban Forestry staff are offering home delivery and optional on-site planting.

Each tree also comes with free mulch and a care guide. Now in its ninth year, the program has distributed nearly 12,000 trees to private properties, apartment complexes, and community spaces with owner approval. Businesses, schools, and places of worship are also eligible, provided the trees are planted on private property within Portland city limits, the City of Portland stated.
