
A dramatic pursuit and standoff came to a conclusion in Durham, NH, as Belmont man Scott E. Newcomb, 55, was arrested following a police chase that prompted a multi-hour face-off with authorities. Information provided to the New Hampshire State Police alerted them to be on the lookout for a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500 linked to an ongoing Belmont investigation, eventually leading to the eventful capture of Newcomb, according to Boston 25 News.
The incident began after the Strafford Police Department located the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but Newcomb did not comply. This led to a pursuit by State Troopers and the involvement of multiple law enforcement agencies, including those from Durham, Belmont, Somersworth, Strafford, and Dover. During the ensuing chase, a minor passenger was released from the vehicle in Somersworth and was unharmed, as reported by NBC Boston. The pursuit continued across several communities until tire deflation devices brought the Dodge to a halt on Route 4 in Durham.
The situation escalated when Newcomb refused to leave his vehicle, bringing traffic on Route 4 to a standstill and leading to a lengthy standoff with police. Negotiators eventually succeeded in persuading him to exit the truck, after which he was arrested and handed over to the Belmont Police Department to face charges, including kidnapping, reckless conduct, and disobeying an officer.
His court date is yet to be scheduled Newcomb's erratic refusal heightened the standoff which saw several hours of negotiations before his surrender. Local law enforcement and emergency services such as the Durham Fire Department and McGregor Memorial EMS provided crucial support during the incident, ensuring the standoff was brought to a safe resolution.
