Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield has formally appointed Benjamin Gutman as Deputy Attorney General, solidifying the DOJ’s senior leadership team. Rayfield praised Gutman, saying, "Ben brings a rare combination of brilliance, humility, and public-service grit to the Oregon Department of Justice," according to the Oregon Department of Justice.
Gutman previously served as interim Deputy Attorney General and Oregon’s Solicitor General, with experience arguing high-profile cases before the Supreme Court. His appointment aligns with Rayfield’s efforts to protect working families and restore public trust in the department, as reported by the Oregon Department of Justice.
Before joining Oregon, Gutman worked as chief administrative judge and western director for the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, Deputy Solicitor General for New York, and appellate attorney for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He has a B.A. magna cum laude in mathematics and philosophy and a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was executive editor of the Yale Law Journal. Gutman has started his role as Oregon’s Deputy Attorney General, joining Attorney General Rayfield’s senior team with a Chief of Staff and Chief Operating Officer, as stated by the Oregon Department of Justice.
