A Bronx man has been charged with a series of harrowing crimes against his family. The man, identified as Joshua Burnside, 29, is facing indictment for a gruesome episode in which he allegedly attacked his wife with a knife and subjected his 12-year-old stepdaughter to severe torture, according to reports from the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
During the disturbing incident, which took place on October 22 in the Belmont neighborhood, Burnside reportedly stabbed his wife following an argument, forcing her out of their apartment. The couple's other two young children, aged 5 and 2, were unharmed, but the violence escalated tragically as Burnside turned his attention to his stepdaughter, who was stabbed with knives and a fork, according to a statement from Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark obtained by Bronx District Attorney's Office.
The Bronx District Attorney's Office went on to describe the appalling details, stating, "What started as an argument between the defendant and his wife descended into an ordeal of terror as he allegedly stabbed his wife and then gouged her 12-year-old daughter, allegedly shoving a tool into the girl’s head almost killing her." Alongside attempted murder, Burnside faces charges of assault, child endangerment, and weapon possession, and entered a not-guilty plea before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Alvin Yearwood.
Following the attack, the victims were taken to NYC Health+ Hospitals Jacobi for treatment, with the stepdaughter being transferred to Cohen Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park. Surgeons there faced the grim task of removing a 6-inch sharp object that had been driven through the girl's nose into her brain. She remains in recovery with what promises to be a long, painful journey to heal from the significant injuries, as outlined by the district attorney's office.
The prosecution of the case is underway with Supervising Assistant District Attorney William Browne and Assistant District Attorney Emma Wardle from the Domestic Violence Bureau overseeing the proceedings, the Bronx District Attorney's Office detailed. Officials thanked NYPD Detective Brianna Constantino and Police Officer Keanu Phillip for their roles in gathering evidence for the investigation. The next court appearance for Joshua Burnside is scheduled for February 23, 2026, by which time the family might begin to see some semblance of justice for the incomprehensible acts they have suffered.
