A Broward county man, Keith Evan Woodward, age 53, is facing serious charges after what authorities have described as a premeditated attack on his own mother. The incident allegedly involved Woodward striking his 82-year-old mother with a frying pan and attempting to smother her with pillows, NBC Miami reports.
The alleged attack occurred on a Sunday in Coral Springs, when Woodward became agitated while looking for a caretaker's phone number. He admitted to police that he had intended to kill his mother "due to her early dementia and need for constant assistance," as per the Miami Herald. After the attempted smothering, his mother managed to escape, prompting Woodward to call emergency services, confessing to the attack and stating that he was "going to hell" for his actions.
Following his arrest, Woodward was held without the possibility of bail and is now awaiting legal proceedings. His mother, whose identity has not been disclosed, was hospitalized with unspecified injuries and is reported to be conscious. Details about her condition have been sparse, though investigators are evaluating the extent of the trauma she has endured.
