An early morning incident in Pompano Beach today led to a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy being hospitalized and the arrest of another driver. The collision occurred at the intersection of West Atlantic Boulevard and Northwest 27th Avenue around 5:40 a.m., according to officials.
Authorities reported that the deputy was transported to an area hospital with injuries, that are not believed to be life-threatening. Following the crash, the second driver involved initially left the scene but was later found and taken into custody by BSO deputies on charges of a hit-and-run involving injuries, WSVN reports.
Following the crash, traffic was shut down in all directions at the intersection, giving room to emergency crews and investigators. NBC Miami obtained video footage showing the sheriff's patrol vehicle positioned diagonally across the road with its front bumper detached and a material used to absorb oil spills beneath it. Nearby, a red pickup truck with airbags deployed and surrounded by debris was part of the scene.
While details about how the accident occurred are still under investigation, BSO has asked the public to seek alternate routes and avoid the area for the time being. The name of the driver arrested for leaving the scene has not been released at the time of this report, the BSO told NBC Miami.
