A somber scene unfolded on Interstate 40 as a California man lost his life following a collision on the westbound lanes near Briley Parkway on Sunday. The 66-year-old semi-truck driver perished after his vehicle was struck by a Toyota Corolla and rolled over. The accident took place around noon, just as the day was gearing up with activity, according to FOX17.
The driver of the Corolla, an 18-year-old from Mt. Juliet named Mero Abdallah, survived with non-life-threatening injuries, having failed to make a turn from the Briley Parkway exit ramp, as reported by WSMV. Abdallah's vehicle continued off the roadway, finally coming to rest in a ravine. Despite the violent nature of the accident, it was noted by the Metro Nashville Police Department that no evidence of impairment was present at the scene.
In response to the crash, sections of I-40 were closed to address the aftermath, which included scattered debris from the overturned semi-truck. The roadways have since been reopened, as necessary cleanup efforts were completed and duly noted by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, which was highlighted in WKRN's coverage of the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, with initial reports and video evidence suggesting that Abdallah failed to negotiate the turn properly onto I-40 West from the Briley Parkway exit ramp, colliding into the side of the semi-truck with tragic outcomes. Transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Abdallah's injuries have been confirmed as non-life-threatening, which was confirmed by the MNPD, as per WKRN.
