Caltrain has made a significant leap, earning the title of America's fastest-growing transit agency, according to the American Public Transportation Association's (APTA) Transit Wrapped 2025 list. This surge in growth was primarily fueled by the launch of new high-performance electric trains in September 2024, which have noticeably enhanced the rider experience by offering faster and more frequent service.

The uptick in ridership was confirmed by Caltrain's 2025 Customer Satisfaction Survey, which showed a year-over-year growth of 57%. Remarkably, weekend ridership has doubled, and the agency witnessed five consecutive months of over a one million riders. The satisfaction among users also soared to new highs, with surveyed riders handing out an average satisfaction rating of 4.41 out of 5, a considerable increase from 4.02 in 2024. "Caltrain is dedicated to delivering safe, reliable and quality service to its riders, and the increased ridership and satisfaction levels reflect our agency’s commitment to doing just that," Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard told Caltrain.

While Caltrain is celebrating this growing success, agencies across the the Bay Area are dealing with financial challenges as the rise of work-from-home arrangements continues to reshape commuter trends. In response to this shift, Caltrain has aggressively pursued a three-pronged approach: streamlining costs, capitalizing on its assets, and refining services to attract more riders. These efforts seem to be paying off, as the preliminary FY25 budget showcases positive results from these strategies, which include both cost savings and additional revenue generation beyond initial projections.

In a recent move to secure the future of Bay Area transit, Governor Newsom signed SB 63 in November, which paves the way for a regional revenue measure to appear on the November 2026 ballot. Should this measure be approved by voters, it would ensure a stable funding source for Caltrain and other transit systems in the region. However, underscores the importance of such measures, stating, per Caltrain, "If no external funding materializes, through a regional measure or otherwise, Caltrain would be forced to take actions to reduce the structural funding gap."
