Landlords in Carmel, take note. In a move aimed at easing the burden on property owners, the Carmel City Council has decided to give those of you procrastinators out there a bit more time to get your rental dwellings registered. They've unanimously agreed to push the deadline to February 1, 2026. This eleventh-hour reprieve extends a pretty critical lifeline to landlords as the original deadline was fast approaching, as per the City of Carmel website.
There's a distinction being made with this extension, so listen up. If your property existed before this new enforcement date, and you get it registered by January 31, 2026, you're in the clear. Even if your dwelling happens to be in one of those subdivisions where the renter population exceeds the recent 10% cap limit. This is a critical point to grasp, lest your property be left unprotected by the cloak of past compliance.
The standard fee for registration is pocket change, really – five bucks. But if you're thinking you can drag your feet, be warned, the city council's leniency has limits. Starting February 1, those penalties start piling up quick. It's $100 tacked on if you're a month late and double that if you stretch it to two months. With sums like these, late isn't a smart strategy.
Registering isn't rocket science either. Just hit up the Rental Registration page to get started. For those with the foresight or just plain common sense to have given their email address to the city folk, a handy reminder will be dropping into your inbox with all you need to take action.
