The City of Chandler has made a significant move in their leadership roster by naming Jeremy Abbott as the new Public Works & Utilities Director. Abbott, who has over two decades of experience in the public works sector, stepped into the role after John Knudson's retirement last September.
Abbott isn't new to the Chandler city team, having served as the Assistant Director since 2022. In that position, he was credited for optimizing the city’s $1.4 billion capital improvement program for water and wastewater infrastructure. "Jeremy has been instrumental in creating stability in our public works and utility services through proactive investments in the city’s infrastructure and operational efficiencies," Chandler City Manager John Pombier explained in a statement obtained by the City of Chandler.
Before his time in Chandler, Abbott accumulated a wealth of experience across Arizona. He served three years as Public Works Assistant Director in the City of Avondale and spent 17 years in various engineering roles for Lake Havasu City. These roles have honed his expertise in civil engineering, project management, and water resources, making him a seasoned leader in municipal services.
Apart from his practical experience, Abbott’s educational background bolsters his qualifications. As a registered professional engineer and a certified water and wastewater operator, he has an impressive combination of field certifications and academic accolades. Additionally, Abbott holds a master’s degree in environmental and resource management, with a focus on water resources, from Arizona State University, and bachelor's degrees in environmental engineering and public affairs. His appointment follows a notable career trajectory that marries hands-on utility work with strategic public management, according to the City of Chandler.
