In a leap towards sustainability, the Charlotte Fire Department is gearing up to introduce a low-emission companion to its fleet – an electric-powered fire engine, which is set to become part of the line-up for Engine 30. Revealed through the department's social media channels, this eco-friendly vehicle is distinct in its near-silent operation, a stark contrast to the roar traditionally associated with fire trucks.
As they've been getting acquainted with their new firefighting tool over several weeks, the firefighters offered insights into this experience through a video linked on Charlotte Fire Department Facebook. It showcased the crew's hands-on training with the engine, highlighting the differences in performance and sound compared to traditional fire engines. The posted video has given the public a sneak peek at what the future holds for Engine 30.
The electric engine is central to Charlotte Fire's push for innovation alongside operational preparedness. While the crew is adapting to the vehicle's quiet nature, which is unusual given the very audible cues of typical fire engines, this one is designed to mitigate noise pollution without compromising on performance. As a backup in case of emergencies or long-duration operations, the truck also houses a diesel system.
