In a new push to combat rising crime in Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has kicked off Operation Safe Season, a collaborative effort with multiple law enforcement agencies targeting increasing violence in Uptown and surrounding areas. According to a statement from CMPD, this initiative ramps up police visibility and stringent law enforcement, aiming to establish a sense of safety for the city's residents and visitors.

CMPD Chief Estella D. Patterson, who is newly appointed, has made it her mission to quickly begin to significantly "reduce violent crime and disorder and addressing the perception of crime," as she stated in the CMPD press release. The crux of Operation Safe Season is to maintain a dense officer presence in peak hours and foster multi-agency collaboration to leverage a wider resource pool and make a considerable impact. Entailing specialized units like the Crime Reduction Units and the Juvenile Accountability and Diversion Empowerment team (JADE), the operation also involves a dedicated task force to address immediate concerns in the city's hotspots.

Looking at the current crime statistics, Charlotte has surprisingly seen a 9% decrease in overall crime for the year, with an impressive 20% dip in violent offenses and a 6% reduction in property crime. Nevertheless, Uptown's Central Division isn't keeping with this trend, seeing a 15% uptick in violent crime. CMPD's efforts, however, are not without foundation; strategies like the Entertainment District Unit (EDU), the CROWN Culture Initiative, and Operation TRIO have already been set in motion to tackle these concerning numbers, resulting in hundreds of traffic stops, arrests, and firearm seizures.

Backing the operation, Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather highlighted the need to bear down on crime committed by repeat offenders in the area. "It's the reason why we have devoted increased attention and trial time to crimes that have been the focus of CMPD's CROWN Initiative," Merriweather told CMPD. The campaign has led to prosecutors being expressly assigned to tackle repeat offenders in the district, which is expected to be a model for other neighborhoods.

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina Russ Ferguson expressed gratitude towards Chief Patterson for placing a spotlight on the security of Uptown, signifying the importance of safety for the sustained vibrancy of Charlotte's center city. Finally, residents and tourists are urged to stay vigilant, and if suspicious behavior is sighted, to swiftly report by calling 911 or using Charlotte Crime Stoppers via their mobile app, hotline, or website to share information anonymously to aid in crime resolution.
