The City of Clayton has officially announced that a general municipal election is set for April 7, 2026. Voters will decide on three councilmembers, with one representative coming from each ward to serve a three-year term.
Fulfilling the role of a councilmember comes with a specific set of requirements. The elected must be at least twenty-five years of age, a qualified voter in the state of Missouri, and a resident of the City of Clayton for no less than two years prior to the election. Additionally, those representing the wards need to maintain residency within those wards. As stated by the City of Clayton, "Councilmembers shall hold no other remunerative position in the city government during their terms." Moreover, should any councilmember forfeit their resident status in Clayton or their ward, or face conviction of a crime involving moral turpitude, they will be forced to relinquish their office.
For those interested in running for office, the window to step forward is limited. The filing period opened promptly at 8:00 a.m. last Tuesday, December 9, and it will draw to a close at 5:00 p.m. on December 30. During this period, Declarations of Candidacy are to be submitted to the City Clerk at 10 N. Bemiston Avenue. It's worth noting for all potential candidates that the city hall will be closed on December 25, in observance of the holiday season.
Candidates will appear on the April ballot in the order that their declarations were filed., creating an incentive for early filing. The city's electorate will have access to a list of the candidates, which will aid in the informed voting that is crucial for determining the city's direction. Further details on the election and how to file for candidacy can be found on the official City of Clayton website.
