Gunfire erupted before dawn Sunday in the 500 block of Missouri Avenue in East St. Louis, leaving two people with gunshot wounds and sending them to the hospital. Illinois State Police responded to a call of shots fired at about 2:45 a.m., and the investigation into the shooting remains active.
According to First Alert 4, both victims sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital following the overnight shooting. The outlet reports that Illinois State Police are asking anyone with information to come forward, and the agency has set up a tip line through Crimestoppers at 866-371-8477 as well as an email address, [email protected], for the public to submit details.
The block has a troubled history. In October 2023, a 19-year-old man was killed and two others were wounded in a parking lot shooting in that same 500 block of Missouri Avenue, a case that led to a Belleville man being charged with first-degree murder, according to KSDK. Just weeks before Sunday's shooting, a 28-year-old resident was shot and killed at 24th Street and Missouri Avenue on August 2, leading to the arrest of a 21-year-old suspect on first-degree murder charges by Illinois State Police, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Why State Police Are Leading the Investigation
Illinois State Police, rather than East St. Louis municipal police, are directing the active investigation because of the Public Safety Enforcement Group, a unit the state's Division of Criminal Investigation created in October 2020 in partnership with East St. Louis police to lead violent crime and homicide investigations in the city. The unit pairs state troopers and local detectives with community support organizations, according to the agency's own account.
State data show the effort has coincided with a sharp multi-year decline in violence citywide. Homicides in East St. Louis fell 56% between 2020 and 2025, dropping from 34 to 15, while non-fatal shootings decreased 61% over the same span, from 127 down to 50. In 2024 alone, the city recorded 20 homicides and 57 non-fatal shootings, a 26% drop in homicides and a 32% drop in non-fatal shootings compared to the year before, marking what state officials at the time described as a six-year low in local homicides.
Enforcement Push and Clearance Rates
Just two months before Sunday's shooting, Illinois State Police conducted a multi-agency violent crime suppression detail across St. Clair and Madison counties focused on East St. Louis in June, resulting in 24 arrests, 26 felony charges, and eight seized firearms. State police also reported that the Public Safety Enforcement Group raised the city's homicide clearance rate to 67% in 2023, up from 44% in both 2021 and 2022, a track record the agency says is meant to strengthen public trust and encourage witnesses to cooperate.
The 500 block of Missouri Avenue sits near significant civic infrastructure in downtown East St. Louis, including the Melvin Price Federal Building and United States Courthouse, located two blocks east at 750 Missouri Avenue. The block has also dealt with physical hazards beyond gun violence: a fire in December 2025 completely destroyed a vacant building there, part of a pattern of abandoned structures and unlit spaces that have posed recurring safety concerns along the corridor.
The condition and identities of the two people wounded Sunday have not been released, and it remains unclear what led to the gunfire or whether investigators have identified any suspects.
