A 19-year-old from Clint was sentenced to nearly a decade behind bars today after he pleaded guilty to charges of alien smuggling. Jesus David Escareno, who is also known by the alias El Gerver, received a prison term of 115 months for his role as the ringleader of a trafficking network that saw over 100 people transported illegally into the United States, the U.S. Attorney's Office, Western District of Texas reported.
According to the release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Escareno’s operation spanned the Western District of Texas and the District of New Mexico. Working from July 2024 to February 2025, the young man conspired with numerous drivers to ferry aliens in furtherance of their unlawful entry into the United States. Arrested on April 7 and having entered a guilty plea on September 9, Escareno led an enterprise that challenged both immigration law and the very notion of borders.
The case, which was presided over by U.S. District Judge Leon Schydlower, highlighted a persistent and complex issue that law enforcement and communities at the border continue to grapple with. In a statement made by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Western District of Texas, U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas stressed the significance of the sentencing as a message to those who might consider engaging in similar activities.
Investigations were carried out by Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Border Patrol, emphasizing the coordinated effort required to bring such operations to a halt. Spearheading the prosecution was Assistant U.S. Attorney Mathew Engelbaum, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office, Western District of Texas.
