Two sailors were rescued by the Coast Guard off Key West after their 30-foot sailboat, Oria, was left adrift due to a disabling mishap. The incident, which took place 12 miles north of Key West, unfolded without any reported injuries. The disabled vessel was anchored amidst inclement weather, highlighting once again the capriciousness of the sea and the vigilance required to safely navigate its waters, according to the Coast Guard's official release.
After being adrift for two days, the help came at approximately 10:30 a.m. last Saturday when Coast Guard Sector Key West watchstanders were notified by a 911 relay call. The mariners, on a journey from Cape Coral to Key Largo, were endearing to find themselves in desperate need of rescue. In response, a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Key West was dispatched and successfully brought the sailors back to land.
A safety marine information broadcast was subsequently issued, advising other vessels to be cautious when transiting the area. Chief Warrant Officer Alex Dominicci, command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Key West, stressed the essentiality of reliable communication in emergencies. "We are incredibly grateful we were able to get in contact with these individuals to get them back to their families", Dominicci said in a statement obtained by the Coast Guard's official release. He added, "This case highlights the importance of having multiple means of communication beyond a cell phone on board your vessel, such as a VHF marine radio or an emergency position indicating radio beacon in case of an emergency."
