Cobb County officials and lawmakers gathered around the breakfast table to hash out priorities for the approaching legislative session, according to a Cobb County Government report. Chairwoman Lisa Cupid initiated a discussion on a variety of critical issues, including annexation and deannexation, Next Generation 911 systems, and improving support for evictions, squatters, mental health reform, and first responder programs.
During these preliminary talks, Representative David Wilkerson, the head of the county's legislative delegation, underscored the necessity of cross-tier communication. "It is important that we have these conversations," Rep. Wilkerson told the group. "We all represent our constituents at different levels, and it helps everyone to discuss issues that could impact residents of Cobb County." He noted that coordination among local and state officials is essential as they prepare for the upcoming legislative session, according to the Cobb County Government.
Later that day, county leaders convened with delegates from the seven cities within Cobb to iron out an agreement aimed at reducing service redundancy and clarifying responsibilities. Under the scope of the Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) Act, they addressed land-use issues and the need to ensure city-county compliance with state laws.
According to the Cobb County Government, Chairwoman Lisa Cupid said the meeting helped leaders stay mindful of the broad array of county work. “We are stronger when we work together,” she said. “It was helpful today to have this meeting to give us a heads up on some of the issues that may come up and impact the county.”
With an understanding that annexation timelines and other land-use matters will affect both city and county operations, the group pledged to develop standardized procedures that comply with state law.
