The Tennessee Department of Education recently hosted its annual Excellence in Education event, where it celebrated the state's educational leaders for their outstanding contributions in the last year. Among the awards given were the Principal of the Year and Supervisor of the Year for the 2025-2026 school year. According to the TDOE announcement, Deanna Jones, leading Bailey Station Elementary School in Collierville, earned the title of Principal of the Year, while Diana Wood of Putnam County Schools was named Supervisor of the Year.
Commissioner of Education Lizzette Reynolds praised the awardees, stating, "I am honored to recognize each of these individuals who play key roles in transforming students’ futures by creating positive and lasting changes in their districts and schools." Jones was acknowledged for her efforts to forge a district-wide interscholastic public learning community, promoting leadership, culture, and academics. Kelley Harrell, last year's recipient of the Principal of the Year, congratulated Jones, saying, "Your leadership shapes a brighter future for every student you serve."
On the other hand, Diana Wood's work with the Bright Start Tennessee steering committee and multiple local organizations solidified her stance as a transformative figure in early childhood education and as a passionate advocate for children and their families. Cathy Pressnell, the previous Supervisor of the Year, crowned Wood's recognition as a testament to the often unseen work of district supervisors who ensure the seamless operation of schools.
The event also honored Principal and Supervisor finalists from the state's three grand divisions. Jessica Conatser, Caitlin Bullard, and Amy Wooley were named as Grand Division Principals of the Year for their respective regions. Holly Flora, Lori Sexton, and Megan Gaschler received similar honors on the supervisory side. The department furthermore announced Celby Glass and Julie Seymour as the Tennessee RISE Award state finalists, now competing for the national accolade.
These distinctions highlight the continuous efforts of educational leaders in Tennessee to provide high-quality learning experiences and support for students and teachers. More details on the winners and finalists can be found on the Department of Education's Educator Recognition webpage.
