Gearing up for the holiday season, Shelby County Commissioner Erika Sugarmon has an event in store that promises to roll out fun and festive cheer for Memphis youth. Wheels & Beats: Memphis Youth Skate Jam and Giveaway is scheduled to take off on December 20 from noon to 3 p.m., right at Old Time Pottery. It's where kids aged 6-16 can snag a free skateboard on a first-come, first-served basis, as the supplies last, according to the county's website.
Adding to the holiday cheer, the event will include live DJ performances and a special “Battle of the DJs” featuring LaDell Beamon and DJ Jay Woods. Families can also take advantage of skateboarding lessons provided by LaterSkaters, giving children the chance to learn basic skills such as ollies and kickflips—perhaps the start of a new annual tradition. Free food and drinks will be offered, ensuring attendees and young skateboarders alike can enjoy festive treats alongside the music.
Commissioner Sugarmon, in partnership with local organizations like the Heal the Hood Foundation of Memphis, LaterSkaters Memphis, MSCS Board Member Tamarques Porter, the YMCA, the Shelby County Health Department, and the Shelby County Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency - not to mention Checkers - is behind this community-boosting initiative.
"The holiday should be a time of joy, support, and togetherness. We want every child to feel seen, celebrated, and encouraged, and this event is just one way we can uplift our families and community," Sugarmon explained, emphasizing the core message of the event, as reported by the event's press release.
