A Decatur man received a sentence of six months' probation after pleading guilty to the federal offense of flying a drone over Truist Park during the MLB All-Star Game in July 2025. Mitchell Parsons Hughes, 47, also incurred a fine of $500 for his actions. According to a statement made by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia, Hughes was charged with knowingly violating national defense airspace.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforced a temporary flight restriction (TFR) during the event, prohibiting drones within a one nautical mile radius of the stadium. This safety measure is a regular feature at major sporting events, intended to protect the attending public. Despite the restrictions, and warnings via his drone's control panel, Hughes proceeded with the illegal flight. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg emphasized the severity of the offense, saying, "Anyone attempting to fly a drone in a prohibited manner can expect to be prosecuted," as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Flight restrictions serve the dual purpose of protecting individuals in and around the venues and securing the airspace. "Flying a small drone means you are flying an aircraft, and unsafe behavior will cost you," FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown stated, stressing the potential risks to public safety and security operations, as noted by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Enforcement partners, including the FBI and Department of Transportation - Office of Inspector General, contributed to the investigation. The case underscores the commitment by these authorities to safeguard events from unsafe drone activities, said Joseph Harris, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General’s Southern Region. "Flying drones illegally—especially above large sporting events filled with families, friends, and fans—poses serious risks,” he noted, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office. The FAA and Cobb County Police Department were also commended for their investigative efforts.
As high-profile gatherings like the upcoming FIFA World Cup approach, officials highlight the importance of adherence to UAV regulations. A "No Drone Zone" policy is in effect at such events, with strict enforcement measures including arrest, fines, and potential imprisonment for violations.
