The rise in house fires throughout DeKalb County has continued with another family being forced from their home on Flakes Mill Road in Ellenwood, adding to the near dozen incidents that first responders have tackled within just three days. The blaze, which broke out late Tuesday night, caused significant damage to the structure, making the residence unlivable, as reported by Atlanta News First. Although there were no human casualties reported in the latest incident, the family's dog was trapped and later treated at the scene by firefighters, surviving the ordeal.
This series of fires, a surge concentrated in metro Atlanta and hitting DeKalb County with pronounced intensity, included a devastating fire on Monday afternoon that tragically ended the life of 21-year-old Izaiah Taylor, a college football player, at his grandfather's residence on Rockcliff Court. Taylor was visiting for the holidays when the incident took place. This string of incidents has prompted DeKalb County firefighters to issue warnings about the heightened risk of fires.
A few days prior to this string of blazes, a separate house fire on Flakes Mill Road displaced another family. The midnight fire erupted and spread rapidly from the basement into the attic as described by FOX 5 Atlanta. Crews responded swiftly, and the family managed to evacuate without harm. Responders treated an animal on site, likely saving its life.
Investigators have not yet concluded the causes behind these fires; however, the pattern of recent events has put a spotlight on fire safety as the holiday season progresses.
