On Tuesday night in Warren, police arrested 31-year-old Otez Coil of Detroit after a high-speed chase that began near Van Dyke and Civic Center Blvd., ending when he crashed a white Jeep Cherokee while driving with his 9-year-old child. Officers reported open alcohol containers in the vehicle, noted a strong odor of alcohol, and took Coil for a blood test to determine intoxication levels, according to the City Of Warren.
Coil faces charges including Child Abuse 4th Degree, Fleeing & Eluding 2nd Degree, Operating While Intoxicated, and Driving with a Suspended License. He was arraigned at the 37th District Court, entered a not guilty plea, has a next court date on January 6, 2026, and bond is set at $50,000 cash/surety only; his record includes prior larceny and fleeing and eluding convictions from 2022, as reported by the City Of Warren.
“This was an incredibly dangerous situation where a suspect chose to operate a vehicle while intoxicated and then flee, endangering not only the public but their own child in an effort to escape responsibility for their actions,” Police Commissioner Eric Hawkins said, noting that the child was found unharmed. Warren Police ended the pursuit, preventing further danger to others on the road, as stated by the City Of Warren.
