A Dorchester man, Anthony Dew, has been sentenced to a maximum of nine years in prison after a Suffolk Superior Court judge delivered a verdict in a brutal 2024 assault case. According to the Suffolk District Attorney's Office, the 43-year-old was found guilty on charges of assault and battery, and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, alongside strangulation in the attack against a homeless 51-year-old woman.
Judge Michael Pineault handed down the sentence last Friday, venerating the first step of justice for what has been described as a relentless assault. On the evening of September 8, 2024, Dew lured the woman with the promise of drugs to his mother's residence on Evelyn Street, where the attack occurred, leaving her grievously injured and in need of medical attention. Despite the recent sentencing, a January 21 status hearing awaits Dew for the remaining charges of attempted murder, rape, and assault to murder, where a mistrial was previously declared.
The victim's striking account provided to law enforcement detailed a harrowing ordeal, where Dew beat and strangled her before abandoning her outside the property. First responders found her in a distressed state, with injuries that were a testament to the severity of the aggression she endured. A forensic examination later linked Dew to the crime, a connection made irrefutable by a CODIS hit that matched his DNA profile with evidence collected from the victim's clothing. "I'm grateful that this defendant has been held accountable for some of the serious charges in this vicious attack and I wish the victim a full recovery from the physical and psychological trauma she suffered," Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said, as per the official statement.
Resources for victims of violence, including those affected by domestic or sexual assault, were also highlighted in the aftermath of this incident. Organizations such as SafeLink, RAINN, and The Network/La Red are available for assistance, with hotlines operating 24/7 to provide support in multiple languages. The necessary contact information and details of these services are available through the District Attorney's office official press release.
