Yesterday, downtown Miami was the site of a police investigation as officers examined an abandoned piece of luggage left at a bus stop outside the Miami-Dade County Children’s Courthouse located at 155 NW 3 St., as reported by Local 10. In a separate incident on Monday morning, a security officer at the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. United States Courthouse spotted another suspicious package resting by a tree, which prompted the calling of the bomb squad to investigate the matter further, according to NBC6.
These back-to-back occurrences stirred significant concern as the areas around both courthouses, distinct places of justice, morphed momentarily into scenes that appeared ripped from a procedural drama, the contents of the packages hanging uncertain in the balance before the authorities, after the investigation concluded, they reopened the area at the Miami-Date County Children’s Courthouse to the public, and also later, near the federal courthouse, after no threats were discovered. The response teams showed quick action, seamlessly securing the perimeters and launching into routine protocols designed to protect the citizens who pass through these judicial corridors daily.
The Miami Police Department instructed the local community to avoid Northwest 1st Avenue between 3rd and 5th streets while they dealt with the federal courthouse package incident, before also blocking off North Miami Avenue as well, a marked move born "out of an abundance of caution," signifying the heightened reflexes cultivated in a city that is no stranger to threats both real and imagined. Both investigations of the suspicious items have culminated without incident, leaving no injuries reported, according to NBC6.
