Travelers frequenting the scenic route between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg should brace for expected delays starting January 2026. The National Park Service has announced the commencement of the Gatlinburg Spur Improvement Project. Aimed at enhancing both safety and infrastructure, this multi-year undertaking will particularly affect traffic from January 5 through April 14, 2026.
According to a social media post from the Pigeon Forge Police Department, construction activities will focus on adding paved road shoulders to prevent vehicle drop-offs, replacing outdated guardrails, and improving the current gravel pull-offs. These enhancements are crucial for ensuring a safer journey along this picturesque section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
For those accustomed to cruising uninterrupted, expect single-lane closures daily between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with a maximum one-mile length of the closure at any given time. "Expect single-lane closures daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (max 1-mile length). Traffic delays are likely, so please drive carefully!" warns the Pigeon Forge Police Department.
Motorists are encouraged to plan for additional travel time or seek alternative routes, as these improvements, though posing an inconvenience in the short term, are designed to create a safer and more reliable passage in the future. For updates and further details on the project's progress, travelers can keep an eye on the National Park Service announcements and local traffic advisories.
