The Fishers Fire Department recently added 15 RKI GX-Force 4 gas monitors to their equipment. According to a department social media post, the new monitors provide advanced air monitoring capabilities for frontline and command units, helping crews detect potential hazards during incidents.
The new monitors can detect various hazardous gases, including combustible and explosive gases, oxygen depletion, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide. They are designed for use indoors, outdoors, in confined spaces, and for locating gas leaks that are not visible or detectable by smell. The equipment, provided by RKI Instruments, was accompanied by three days of hands-on training for firefighters, supported by AFC International Inc., to ensure proper use.
The Fishers Fire Department emphasized that the new monitors support operational consistency and community safety. The department noted that the devices can operate in both normal and leak-check modes and feature a built-in sampling pump capable of drawing air samples from up to 100 feet away.
The Fishers Fire Department also issued a safety reminder alongside the announcement of the new equipment: "Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. Make sure your home has working CO alarms on every level and near sleeping areas."
