Residents of Fishers now have a new natural sanctuary to explore with the opening of the 120-acre Fishers White River Park. According to a statement from the City of Fishers, the park is the latest effort by city officials to increase green spaces and recreational opportunities, appealing to trail enthusiasts, families, and students alike.
The new park boasts 2.45 miles of trails, including two paved trails, a 0.67-mile crushed rock loop, and a 1.33-mile dirt-and-gravel trail, complete with amenities like scenic overlooks, creek and river access points for paddling, and a kayak launch. Mayor Scott Fadness heralded the opening as a fulfillment of a promise, stating, "This investment reflects our long-term commitment to building a connected system of parks and trails across Fishers," and emphasized the park's role in expanding access to the White River and nature year-round, as per the City of Fishers website.
Much more than just trails and natural vistas, Fishers White River Park also aims to be an educational resource. A partnership with Hamilton Southeastern Schools and Friends of the White River is introducing a hands-on study trip for sixth-grade students, bringing classroom learning outside to the riverbanks, as detailed on the city's news release. The White River Park provides students with practical lessons on water ecology and quality.
A feature that stands out is the park's strategic connection to nearby Fishers Heritage Park and beyond, through the new Bur Oak Bridge to Carmel’s Hazel Landing Park. In line with the city's focus on wellness, Fishers Recreation and Wellness Director Jake Reardon McSoley told City of Fishers officials, “Fishers is a city that embraces the outdoors all year long. This park was intentionally designed to showcase the beauty of the White River in every season.” The interconnected trail system is a step towards improving mobility and access to natural spaces in the region.
The development of Fishers White River Park received a significant financial boost through two major grants, including $4.7 million from Governor Eric Holcomb’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative and an additional $1 million from the Hamilton County Commissioners.
