A Sunday morning collision at North Route 23 and River Road in unincorporated Marengo turned a quiet stretch of highway into a mess of twisted metal and downed lines, leaving five adults hurt, fire officials said. Marengo Fire & Rescue District crews were dispatched at about 10:19 a.m. and arrived to find one vehicle stopped in the roadway and another in a ditch, tangled in utility-pole wiring. Everyone involved had already gotten out of the vehicles by the time first responders pulled up, and all five adults were evaluated at the scene before being taken to local hospitals with injuries described as minor.
What crews reported at the scene
According to CBS Chicago, both vehicles took heavy damage in the impact, and investigators are still working to piece together how the crash happened. The outlet reported that the call was upgraded because of the number of people involved and that the McHenry County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation. Crews were reported on scene at roughly 10:19 a.m.
Response and road closures
The Northwest Herald reports the incident was elevated through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, which brought in extra ambulances and support. Fire districts from Boone County, Genoa-Kingston, Harvard, Huntley and Union answered the call to assist Marengo crews. That account notes that a portion of Route 23 was shut down in both directions for about an hour while responders treated patients and cleared debris. Photos accompanying the local report show one of the vehicles sitting in a roadside ditch, snarled in utility-pole wiring.
Investigation continues
The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, local TV coverage reported. WIFR noted that crews stayed at the intersection while tow operators removed the wreckage and utility workers dealt with the damaged lines. Authorities have not yet released the ages or genders of those involved in the crash.
A stretch with a history of crashes
This section of Route 23 has already seen serious trouble this year. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office investigated a fatal crash near Marengo in mid-October. The sheriff's office said a single-vehicle collision on the rural state route proved deadly, a reminder of how quickly conditions on these highways can turn dangerous. Investigators are asking anyone with information about Sunday morning's wreck to contact the sheriff's office.
Marengo Fire & Rescue District officials have not released additional details beyond their initial news release to local media. This story will be updated if more information becomes available.
