In response to concerns about the unchecked rise of artificial intelligence, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hosted a roundtable in Jupiter, focusing on the implementation of a proposed AI Bill of Rights to protect the state's residents from the overreach of tech giants. The Governor's apprehensions are rooted in the uncertainty of AI's societal impact, which includes risks to children's safety and potential financial strains on utility consumers. "We need to ask whether we should surrender our future to large tech corporations or ensure that we, the people, have a voice in shaping how this technology develops," DeSantis stated at the event, according to CBS12.
The governor intends to proactively protect Floridian interests against the rapid advancement of technology. Indeed, DeSantis aims to not allow the technology to simply operate unchecked, endorsing a set of principles that would work to enhance, rather than replace, human experiences. He asserted, "We cannot simply let these technologies operate unchecked," as noted by CBS12.
One of the key concerns is the construction of hyperscale data centers, colossal infrastructures that need vast amounts of power and water, which may offer short-term job creation but little to no long-term economic benefits to local communities. "Once built, they may only employ a handful of people, often bringing in workers from outside the community," DeSantis remarked during the discussion, as reported by CBS12.
Amid environmental concerns and high utility costs potentially being offloaded onto residents, the governor reinforced that the companies constructing these centers should not be able to pass their expenses down to families already struggling economically. Aligning with community pushback on the data center constructions, DeSantis aims for technology to serve the public good. "We need to have these discussions," he emphasized, "We're here to ensure that technology serves us, not the other way around," as obtained by CBS12.
Further underscoring this commitment, DeSantis announced new legislation on his Facebook page, expressing the state's dedication to safeguarding citizens' rights, data, tax dollars, and way of life. This announcement came in the form of an "Artificial Intelligence Bill of Rights in Florida," which purports to provide protection from the potential harmful effects of Hyperscale AI Data Centers. "As Al continues to develop we're committed to safeguarding Floridians' rights, data, tax dollars, and way of life," DeSantis wrote on the official Facebook post.
