The City of Fort Wayne is preparing for forecasted snowfall this weekend, which may affect traffic and city services. The Street Department is converting tanker trucks, previously used for leaf collection, into snow plows. Residents are asked to park off-street where possible to allow plows to clear streets, and leaf collection may be delayed during this process.
Fort Wayne has organized its snow response into eighteen routes. Each route will have at least two trucks assigned, with streets prioritized into three levels: one for arterials, two for collectors and Citilink bus routes, and three for residential streets, according to the city’s website. Primary arteries will be cleared first to ensure emergency vehicles and law enforcement can navigate safely, according to the City of Fort Wayne.
After arterial roads are cleared, the city will focus on secondary collector and bus routes. Residential streets will be plowed if snow accumulation reaches three inches or more. If snowfall continues and major streets become slippery again, plowing operations will adjust as needed.
Under normal conditions, the city estimates it will take 10–12 hours to clear priority one and two streets after snowfall ends. According to the Street Department, which manages 1,200 miles of roads, residential streets typically take up to 48 hours to plow, assuming trucks are not redirected back to higher-priority routes. For updates and detailed information on snow removal, residents can visit the Street Department’s official website.
