Four people were injured in a downtown Phoenix shooting just before 2:15 a.m. on Sunday near 1st Street and Washington Street, according to Phoenix Police. Three women and a man were taken to a hospital. The women suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the man’s injuries are life-threatening, FOX 10 Phoenix reports.
After the shooting, police arrested 22-year-old Keon Joubert on Monday. He faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault. The circumstances are still under investigation. Phoenix Police Sgt. Rob Scherer said, “We can’t say whether any of these four victims were the target of Joubert’s shooting,” according to azfamily.com. At least one of the victims was an innocent bystander.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. One couple told FOX 10 Phoenix they ran back into a nightclub after hearing the shots: “It was a lot. It was like ‘Boom, boom, boom, boom.’ It was terrifying.” Several nearby nightclubs opened their doors to shelter those fleeing the gunfire.
The investigation is ongoing, as detectives work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting and the motive behind it. Phoenix Police have made a public appeal for anyone with information to step forward. Sgt. Scherer underscored the need for additional witnesses, stating, "We know there’s other people that were out there that potentially could fill in some of those other puzzle pieces," as quoted in the azfamily.com article. Moreover, Scherer emphasized that the shooting is an isolated event and maintained downtown Phoenix as a safe area.
