In a festive display of community spirit and shared effort, students and staff from Franklin and Coronado High Schools recently reached out to brighten the season for youngsters at Aoy Elementary School. The "Holiday Blessings" event, a tradition that for over 15 years has symbolized unity and generosity, found these two high schools banding together to play Santa for those who might otherwise have less to celebrate.

Held on December 11, the initiative saw the two rival high schools collaborate in a partnership where they "adopted" the elementary campus, showering more than 300 students with personalized gifts. Children's eyes undoubtedly sparkled at the sight of pajamas, blankets, backpacks, toys, and a multitude of carefully selected items, each designed to fulfill a specific wish or need. As reported by El Paso ISD, the gifts included essentials and joyful surprises alike, all wrapped with care by the students from Franklin and Coronado High Schools.

According to Coronado High School's Student Activities Manager, Natalie Mendoza, seeking out these heartfelt presents presents a yearly challenge, but one that is invariably met with overwhelming support. "Sometimes the students ask for a new backpack or even things like a bike and we try to make their holiday wish come true," Mendoza told El Paso ISD. "Every year it is a challenge to collect these gifts, but we are always thankful to everyone who helps us make the holiday season special for the kids in our community."

Students actively engaged in the gift wrapping and delivery process, indicating the level of their commitment. Franklin High School's senior, Abigail Alaniz, shared with El Paso ISD, "We wrapped all the gifts, and it took us all night, but we got it done and we’re here to distribute them to all the students." Alaniz underscored the camaraderie generated by the event, "We do this every year because even though Franklin and Coronado are rivals, we come together during the holiday season." It's an effort that illustrates not just the joy of giving but the powerful outcomes that derive from collaboration between friendly rivals.
